Single storey rear and side extension, Southmead, Bristol
This project involved the design of a single storey rear and side extension for a semi-detached home in Southmead, North Bristol. The existing rear extension was old and poorly built, offering little insulation and limited connection to the garden. It was replaced with a new, well-designed flat-roof structure featuring a central lantern skylight that fills the interior with natural light. Wide bifold doors open onto the garden, creating a bright and welcoming living space.
Inside, the ground floor layout was reconfigured to form a generous open-plan kitchen, dining, and sitting area, designed for comfortable everyday living. The side extension, with its pitched roof profile, accommodates a new bathroom with shower and a corridor linking the garage to the rear garden—improving flow and accessibility throughout the home.
The result is a light-filled, practical space that feels both refreshed and connected, with plenty of room for the homeowners’ grandchildren and extended family to gather, play, and spend time together.
