Modern Family Living Through Light, Space, and Smart Design
This contemporary single-storey wrap-around extension in Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol, reimagines a traditional family home to create a light-filled and flexible living environment. As an architect in Bristol, my goal was to deliver a design that enhances comfort, flow, and practicality — the essence of modern family life.
Project Overview
The project replaced an outdated rear extension with a new flat-roof structure featuring a large central lantern skylight that floods the interior with daylight. A complementary side extension was added to form a seamless connection with the existing house, introducing a spacious utility room and a dedicated home office. Together, these additions transform the ground floor into a brighter, more functional space.

Open-Plan Design and Everyday Living
Inside, the ground floor was completely reconfigured to form an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, a hallmark of contemporary house extensions in Bristol. The generous kitchen island sits at the centre of the space, acting as a natural gathering point for family life and entertaining. Clear sightlines, balanced proportions, and considered materials ensure the home feels both cohesive and inviting.

Natural Light and Architectural Detailing
Natural light was a defining element of this design. The combination of the lantern skylight and full-width glazing connects the home to its garden and transforms how each space feels throughout the day. This approach to architectural design Bristol demonstrates how the right detailing — proportion, glazing, and flow — can elevate even the most familiar home layouts.
